Dragons

Dragons are the shape of things to come. Billy is a Dragon is a new series that Nick Falk and I are working on. Random House have signed us for the first four books in the series. I have just created the first images of dragon for some promotional material.

Dragons are so much fun, I am looking forward to getting my teeth into this one.

Anna in the dog park

Yesterday I was walking my dog Holly in the local park (Holly pictured relaxing below), when I meet Anna and her father walking their dog. I had spoken at Anna's school a few months ago and had seen her in the park a couple of times since. In that time, the talented Anna had drawn a picture of my dog Holly for me.

As impressed as I was (which was a lot), I was even more impressed to see that she had a pencil case filled with sketches of dogs that she had seen when walking in the park. The pictures were all cut out to give to the pooches, owners.

Well done Anna, I love my picture of Holly and Im sure that we will see more from this talented artist in year to come.

Saurus Street Book 6

Im am very close to finishing the 1st stage of drawing for book 6 in the Saurus Street series. I am posting a working drawing here to show some of my working process.

I normally start with a pencil sketch. I then like to select the lines that I think are working the best for the image, then ink the basic details. When selecting these inking lines, I am looking at character gestures, body position and readability of the image. This is the stage that this drawing has reached. I will clean up the image, by rubbing out the pencil work. Then I add the light and shade with water colour washes. the last stage is to do the final ink lining work. This last stage is where all the finer detail (if needed) is added.

Below is a finished example from a different illustration (same book)

You can see in this image the shadowing effect and ink detail. I will start continue to work on book 6 this week and hope to have all the drawings for the book finished by early next week.
